TOP 10 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN RESEARCHING BREEDERS

Bringing a English Golden Retriever puppy into your home is more than just a purchase—it’s the beginning of a long-term relationship with a new family member. We understand how overwhelming it can be to know which breeder to trust. That’s why it’s essential to take your time, do your homework, and ask the right questions.

A reputable breeder not only produces healthy, well-socialized puppies but is also committed to ethical practices and transparency. Below are 10 important questions and considerations to help guide your search and give you confidence in choosing the right breeder for your future pup.

1. Will the breeder take time to speak with you personally—by phone or in person?
A responsible breeder should be willing to have real conversations with you, answer your questions thoroughly, and show genuine interest in where their puppies are going.

2. Is the deposit refundable?
Ask if the breeder offers a refundable deposit policy. Ethical breeders understand that sometimes circumstances change and are upfront about their terms.

3. Are both the sire and dam (the parents) AKC registered?
Proper registration through the American Kennel Club (AKC) is a sign of a breeder’s commitment to standards. Check the AKC Dog Search.

4. Will the puppies come with AKC registration papers?
Confirm that your puppy will be eligible for AKC registration, which helps ensure breed integrity. Learn more about AKC Registration.

5. Can the breeder provide genetic health testing results for both parents?
Ask for genetic health certificates that screen for inherited diseases common to Golden Retrievers. See resources like Orivet.

6. Have the parents passed OFA health clearances?
OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) testing for hips, elbows, eyes, and heart is standard in responsible breeding. Check results on the OFA website.

7. What is the quality of the dogs’ bloodlines?
Looking into the dogs’ pedigrees can help you understand the quality and temperament you might expect. See K9Data for lineage information.

8. Do they offer a puppy health guarantee?
Reputable breeders stand behind the health of their puppies and typically offer a written health guarantee. View an example from Southern Goldens.

9. Will the puppies be examined by a licensed veterinarian before going home?
A wellness exam by a certified vet around 6 weeks of age is essential to catch any early health concerns.

10. Have you read reviews or testimonials from previous buyers?
Hearing from other families about their experiences can give you valuable insight into the breeder’s reputation and reliability.
